Midland Hard Water: 23 to 35 Grains and What to Do About It

Midland's water is among the hardest anywhere, by the City's own figures. Here's the conversion to grains, where the water comes from, what it does to your plumbing, and which fix pays off.

The number, in grains

Softeners and tankless heaters are programmed in grains per gallon. The City of Midland water quality FAQ gives hardness as 400 to 600 parts per million and says to divide by 17.12 to convert. Here's that math done for you:

City figure (ppm)Grains per gallonUSGS class
400about 23Very hard (over 180)
500about 29Very hard
600about 35Very hard

The USGS calls anything over 180 mg/L "very hard." Midland's low end is more than twice that.

Why Midland's water is like this

The City of Midland 2025 Consumer Confidence Report lists a mix of sources. Surface water is bought through the Colorado River Municipal Water District from O.H. Ivie Reservoir, E.V. Spence Reservoir, Lake J.B. Thomas and other CRMWD sources. Groundwater comes from the city's T-Bar Wellfield, which draws on the Pecos aquifer in Loving and Winkler counties, and from the Paul Davis Well Field in Midland County. Blended sources explain why the City gives a range instead of a single figure.

What 23 to 35 grains does to a house

  • Water heaters collect sediment fast. Popping, rumbling and shrinking hot-water supply follow.
  • Tankless units scale their heat exchangers and need descaling far more often than in soft-water towns.
  • Fixtures crust over. Faucet cartridges seize, shower valves drip, and toilet fill valves stick.
  • Appliances like dishwashers, ice makers and evaporative coolers carry the same mineral load.

Options, ranked for water this hard

  1. Ion-exchange softener, sized right. The only option that removes hardness. At Midland levels, capacity matters more than brand.
  2. Softener plus kitchen RO. Soft water for the house, filtered water to drink. The most common setup we install here.
  3. Salt-free conditioner. Reduces scale sticking without salt or a drain. Results vary with product and water. No soft-water feel.
  4. Maintenance only. Regular heater flushes and fixture soaks. Workable for a short stay or a newer heater, but you're managing scale, not stopping it.

If a tankless heater is on your list, sort out treatment first or commit to a descaling schedule. Scale finds tankless units fastest.

What changes the price

Every job is quoted in writing before we start. The variables:

  • Softener capacity for your hardness and household size
  • Whether a loop exists or we cut into the main, plus drain and outlet location
  • Heater swap details: tank or tankless, gas sizing, venting, code items. See water heater installation.
  • Lines that are scaled shut, where repiping is the real fix

Midland water questions

How hard is Midland's water in grains?

The City says hardness ranges from 400 to 600 parts per million and tells residents to divide by 17.12 for grains per gallon. That works out to roughly 23 to 35 grains. We test your tap and set equipment from your actual reading.

My bathroom smells like rotten eggs. Is it the water?

According to the City of Midland, that smell comes from the sink drain, not the water. The City suggests pouring bleach down the drain and letting it sit overnight, or using vinegar and baking soda. If the smell is only on the hot side, a water heater anode reaction is another possibility we can check.

Why does the hardness vary so much?

Midland blends sources: surface water bought through the Colorado River Municipal Water District and groundwater from city well fields. The City publishes a range rather than one number. That's one more reason to test at your own faucet.

Can a softener keep up with water this hard?

Yes, if it's sized for it. Capacity has to match your hardness times your daily use. An undersized unit regenerates constantly, burns salt, and still lets hardness through. We size from your reading and household, not a box label.

Is Midland water safe to drink?

The City reports no water quality violations in 2025, with every regulated contaminant at or below EPA and TCEQ limits. Hardness itself is a nuisance, not a health issue, per the USGS. Some people prefer reverse osmosis at the kitchen tap for taste.

Should I bother with a softener if I'm selling in a few years?

It depends on your heater and fixtures. If the heater is newer, a softener protects it. If you're mostly fighting spots, maintenance may be enough until you move. We'll give you both options in writing.
